Cable Internet Availability

Though cable internet is quickly becoming the premier form of connection for most households across the country, it can still be rare in rural areas. This is why satellite internet remains a viable option for many people out in the “sticks”, but even satellite internet carries sizable flaws with it. In short, the poor folks out in the middle of nowhere have had to suffer with slow connections and some even have to use dial-up modems.

Why Cable is Rare in Rural Areas

Thankfully, cable internet is making some big leaps forward in terms of availability in rural areas. Northern Michigan and Kansas have both recently begun large scale operations to bring broadband internet to even the most remote locations in their domain. But when we ask about the quality of service from cable internet in rural areas, we first have to remember why rural areas have gone without cable in the first place. Broadband is not cheap when it comes to making the wires and cables that connect everybody to the net. This is why you’ll see it more often in cities and more dense locations. With more people living closer together, one doesn’t require as many wires or construction for said wires.

Price is a Factor

Now that more rural parts are getting high speed cable internet availability, though, we must remember that these wires are coming from quite a distance. Thus, it can be assumed that the quality of service is decreased in rural areas despite the fact that broadband is still being used. The longer the cable, the slower the download speed, among other things. To combat this, additional servers must be employed and this can often be unrealistic considering the high cost of getting cable in the first place in a rural area. You can no doubt see the predicament.

But you must think, too, that even though the cable might perform slower, it still may be faster than your current option. If you’re still using something archaic like dial-up, you will still benefit from cable internet no matter how bogged down it is. It is also entirely likely that your location isn’t suitable for satellite internet. These are the things you must consider before you go with a cable connection that may not be as fast as you wish.
