About Charter Cable Internet

Charter Communications is one of the several internet providers that operate in the United States. Like its biggest competitors, Charter provides broadband internet service using cable. Charter's service is unique in that it does not use a telephone line to transmit data as do DSL and dial-up. While this does not necessarily make its cable service faster than those of DSL providers, Charter and other cable internet services are becoming more common as the use of home telephones declines. Therefore, it is an option to consider for those who prefer a cell phone to a land line regardless of the quality of cable versus the qualities of DSL or dial-up.

Like all cable internet services, Charter cable internet is enabled by a modem that uses a Local Area Network (LAN) connection and existing cable television service to relay information. The majority of cable modems can work with Charter and are available for purchase at hardware stores. The modem will connect home computers, via USB or Ethernet, to the cable lines that power the preexisting television service. The computer or computers that are being serviced must be PCs or Macs with CD-ROM drives. Other requirements for Charter internet service include an operating system no older than Windows 98 or Mac OS 9.0, and either Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher, or any version of Safari.

If all of these conditions are satisfied, then a Charter internet connection can be established. The service must be purchased from a local Charter branch. Internet service packages are priced by data transfer rate. The data transfer rate, or bitrate, refers to how many binary digits can be processed at a time. Charter cable internet can have a bitrate of one, five, ten, or twenty mbps (megabits per second). At its lowest bitrate, the internet is only fast when it comes to basic browsing. The higher bitrates, on the other hand, come with a feature that boosts download speeds, and each raise in bitrate means broader browsing capabilities and greater multiple PC coverage. Only a bitrate of five or less, however, can be bundled with other Charter services.

It’s important to note that these services are only available to people who live in Charter's coverage area. Charter limits its coverage to specific local areas in which it corners the market on cable. Therefore, it is not an option for many.
